Velo-city 2024 Conference in Ghent

26 June 2024

From June 18th to 21st, 2024, the Dutch Cycling Embassy lead a delegation of over 80 Dutch experts from 27 public and private organizations to Ghent, Belgium for the 2024 Velo-city Conference, the world’s largest international cycling conference.

The unofficial program began with a guided bike tour of the city on Monday, organized by Fietsberaad Vlaanderen, a knowledge centre on bicycle policies; which ended with a reception courtesy of the Netherlands Embassy in Belgium. The official program began on Tuesday morning, with an opening ceremony led by European Cyclists’ Federation CEO Jill Warren and President Henk Swarttouw. The Dutch Cycling Pavilion then officially opened; a showcase of the best products, expertise and innovative solutions from our network.

The four days of the conference offered countless Dutch speakers in both plenary and parallel sessions. The DCE’s own Chris Bruntlett provided the keynote to the closing plenary on using artificial intelligence to help imagine a better future. The Fietsersbond’s Daan van der Burgh led a presentation on the influence of autism on traffic decisions. Alina Prey (Goudappel) presented on optimising the interchanges between bike and public transportation. Hans Voerknecht (Een Nieuwe Kijk) spoke about cycling for sufficient accessibility for everybody. The city of Utrecht‘s Herbert Tiemens provided a masterclass on how to use transport modelling to identify weak spots in the cycling network. The DCE led a session titled Connecting Through Cycling with short presentations from: Gerdien Rots (Alderwoman of the city of Zwolle), Jaron Borensztajn (Cargoroo), Mohammad Nazarpoor (BYCS Bicycle Mayor of Tehran), and Simone Jorink (Movares).

It was an absolute pleasure to play our small part in a hugely successful Conference in Ghent. Our sincere thanks to the European Cyclists’ Federation, the local organizers, and everyone who visited the Dutch Cycling Pavilion. See you in Gdańsk in 2025!
