Knowledge Rotterdam Fietst at the World Urban Forum 6 November 2024 Cycling News The World Urban Forum (WUF) is a biannual global conference on sustainable urbanisation organised by UN-Habitat. It brings together thought leaders, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss the future of our cities. This year’s 12th edition, held in Egypt, highlighted pressing urban challenges and showcased innovative solutions for creating better places to live, work, and thrive. On November 5, the Dutch Cycling Embassy (DCE) had the honour of hosting a session in the Urban Cinema at WUF12, titled Building a (happy, healthy, and safe) Cycle-Friendly Future for Children. The session featured a screening of Rotterdam Fietst, a short film showcasing Rotterdam’s transformation into a cycling-friendly city. Moderated by Skadi Tirpak (DCE), the event opened with inspiring remarks from Eva Witteman, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cairo. José Besselink, representing the City of Rotterdam and a DCE Board Member, provided an engaging introduction, setting the stage for the documentary. Following the film, distinguished speakers shared their reflections: • Winnie Sambu (World Bicycle Relief): Sharing efforts to empower children in underserved regions through bicycles. • Ana Maria Navia Pelaez (World Resources Institute): Offering insights on the transformative impact of child-friendly urban spaces. • Maud de Vries (BYCS): Highlighting the importance of designing cities for children to foster happier communities. A heartfelt thanks to Nieuw & Verbeterd and Fietsersbond Rotterdam+Regio for creating this evocative film. It set the tone for a meaningful discussion on how cycling can foster happier, healthier, and safer futures for children.
