Knowledge Cycling@Teatime in The Netherlands for a study visit 27 July 2026 General On Friday the 10th of July, the Dutch Cycling Embassy had the pleasure of welcoming Cycling@Teatime in Rotterdam; a group of cycling changemakers from London. Cycling@Teatime is a long-running event series connected to the University of Westminster and the Active Travel Academy, bringing together academics, policymakers and urban mobility professionals to exchange knowledge on cycling and sustainable transport. The group visited Rotterdam to see firsthand how the city is making the transition towards becoming a true cycling city. Project Coordinator Wiel Wijnen guided the group on a cycling tour through Rotterdam, highlighting the city’s most significant recent investments in cycling infrastructure. The tour took in several key locations: Hofplein, which is currently under construction, the Coolsingel, where a major retrofit has transformed a car-dominated boulevard into a vibrant cycling and pedestrian street; the Erasmusbrug and the iconic Maastunnel, which has provided a dedicated cycling connection beneath the Nieuwe Maas since 1942. For a group rooted in the UK academic and changemaking world, what stood out was not just the infrastructure itself, but the thinking behind it. How Rotterdam has made deliberate policy choices to reclaim space from cars and rebalance the city in favour of cyclists and pedestrians. The visit offered a concrete look at how those decisions translate into the built environment, and created a dialogue on what lessons might be carried back to the British context.
