National Bike Summit 2025

8 April 2025

The Dutch Cycling Embassy was honored to join the 25th edition of the National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C. The Summit, organized by the League of American Bicyclists, brings together people from all over the U.S. working in the field of urban mobility. It offers great opportunities to meet peers and learn from each other’s experiences.

Together with Marco Mulder (Arcadis) and Jeroen Steenbakkers (Argaleo), the DCE hosted a workshop during the Summit. One session focused on digital twins and how a digital version of our cities can help us to plan for safer and more attractive cycling infrastructure. The other session focused on the five design principles for bicycle planning and how to apply those principles to your own context. It was an exciting day with participants who eagerly worked together with each other and with the Dutch experts.

On the final day of the Summit, Margot Daris (DCE) presented about behavior change schemes in the Netherlands. These schemes are different for every target group, such as the elderly, school going children, people with a small budget, or commuters. After Margot’s presentation, she was joined by three cities that the DCE has worked together with. David Wright (Bentonville, Arkansas) presented about the learnings they took from the city’s study visits to the Netherlands. The inspiration they took from Dutch infrastructure is now applied to the context in Bentonville. Aileen Bouclé (Miami-Dade, Florida) presented about the Bike Immersion Program to the Netherlands and how this has influenced decision making processes in her county. Shane Rhodes (Eugene, Portland) presented about behavior change campaigns in Eugene and how their thinking was influenced by their 2022 ThinkBike Workshop.
