Knowledge DCE Hosts Webinar on Bikenomics: Why Cycling (Investment) Pays 3 December 2025 Cycling News General On November 20th, 2025, the Dutch Cycling Embassy hosted a German-language webinar on “Bikenomics,” the economic case for cycling. The session explored how socio‑economic data can be used to demonstrate the value of cycling investments and to strengthen the case for investments in cycling infrastructure using quantitative data. Matteo Jarre (Decisio) provided an in‑depth look at the economic evaluation of cycling projects, sharing methodologies and examples that highlight how cycling delivers measurable benefits in terms of health, accessibility, environment, and quality of life. His presentation illustrated how these factors can be translated into economic indicators and expressed in monetary terms to build a data‑driven case for cycling investments. Colleague Freek Lier (Decisio), representing the Province of Utrecht, complemented this perspective with a concrete case study from the Netherlands, the Dom-tot-Dam cycleway that will connect Utrecht and Amsterdam from around 2030 onwards. Using the social cost-benefit analysis conducted for this route, Freek showed how Dutch regions are advancing cycling infrastructure and making route choices by quantifying impacts and positioning cycling as a sound economic investment. The presentations sparked lively exchanges among participants, who discussed how to apply these approaches in their own contexts. Attendees shared ideas on integrating socio‑economic analysis into mobility planning and on communicating the broader benefits of cycling to policymakers and the public. The webinar reinforced the growing importance of data, including socioeconomic data, in shaping sustainable mobility strategies. By expressing the benefits of cycling in euros, stakeholders can make a compelling case for investment, demonstrating that cycling is not only good for health, accessibility, and the environment, but also for the economy. As interest in evidence‑based mobility planning continues to rise, the insights from this webinar will help communities and decision‑makers position cycling as a smart, future‑proof investment.
