DCE at Future Green City Congress

26 September 2024

On September 24th, the Dutch Cycling Embassy had the honor of contributing to two sessions at the Future Green City Congress in Utrecht. From September 23 to 26, 2024, more than 3,000 experts from around the world gathered over four days to share their passion and knowledge about creating livable, sustainable cities. As urban mobility is a key component of a green city, the DCE highlighted the role of cycling in these discussions.

The first session, an Early Bird Dutch Cycling Tour, participants joined a guided bike tour through Utrecht, experiencing a city designed to prioritize people over cars. The tour featured stops at various locations to discuss participants’ observations and provide context on historical, political, and policy developments, with a special focus on how the Dutch enable children and their caregivers to cycle independently and safely to school. The tour was an initiative by Shelley Bontje and Annika Peveril of the Dutch Cycling Embassy and was guided by Eline Wessels from SportUtrecht, an expert in cycling initiatives around schools in the city.

In the second session, we screened the film ‘Car-Free Grand Prix: How the Dutch Bike to Track’.  The short documentary revealed the strategies behind the unique mobility plan of the large F1 event and explored the potential for replicating it at other major events, such as the Olympics and the World Cup. The screening was followed by a panel discussion with Shelley Bontje (DCE) and Jan-Albert de Leur, the cycling advisor for the Province of Noord-Holland.

Thank you to everyone who joined our sessions and contributed to insightful discussions!
