JANSTAD

JANSTAD is an Amsterdam-based consultancy that helps cities and organisations develop cycling strategies and the infrastructure to support them. Founded in 2021, we combine academic urban research with years of experience in international project management and business development. We work along three lines. In mobility strategy, we develop cycling and sustainable mobility strategies and support their implementation. In research and participation, we design evidence-based engagement processes, including for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).

In placemaking, we research, co-design and evaluate public spaces together with the people who use them. Our approach pairs a structural analysis of how urban systems shape daily travel choices with empathy for the people who navigate them. A strategy only works when residents recognise themselves in it, so we treat participation as a core part of the work. A particular focus of ours is tactical urbanism and mobility micro-projects: temporary, low-cost interventions that let residents test a change on the street and build the case for permanent infrastructure.

JANSTAD builds the bridge between Dutch cycling expertise and two markets that deserve more attention: Central and Eastern Europe, and France. We work in Dutch, English, Polish, French and German, and we understand both the planning cultures and the local realities of these regions. In Poland, we are currently developing a bicycle mobility strategy, timed to coincide with a municipal SUMP process.
