Knowledge Exchange in Gothenburg, Sweden

3 September 2024

From August 29th – 30th, the Dutch Cycling Embassy, represented by Project Manager Shelley Bontje, along with our partners Younes Foukalne (Studio Bereikbaar), Robin van der Griend (Mobycon), and Sonja Munnix (Netherlands Enterprise Agency), had the pleasure of being hosted by Göteborgs Stad and Business Region Gothenburg. Our visit included various sessions, bike tours, and a visit to the Mobilitetshotellet in Nordstan.

The Business Region Gothenburg team introduced us to the region, sharing key facts and figures about the area. This was followed by a presentation from Göteborgs Stad, which provided insights into the city’s current mobility and cycling dynamics. We then learned about the recently launched Mobility Hub and had the opportunity to visit the hub, where we engaged with several parties utilising its facilities.

Our knowledge exchange continued as we hopped on Styr & Ställ bicycles for an extensive cycling tour. Throughout the ride, we discussed numerous aspects of cycling and sustainable mobility in a broader sense.

In addition, the small delegation from the Netherlands met with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Sweden to exchange thoughts on the differences in work culture between Sweden and the Netherlands. Insights from Martijn Legêne of Goudappel were particularly valued in this discussion.

Furthermore, in collaboration with Göteborgs Stad, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sweden, and Urbanista, we hosted a breakfast dialogue at Frihamnsdagarna and focused on the question, “How can cycling improve urban life?”.  Johan Rehngren, City Landscape Architect, shared his vision of a liveable, inclusive, and resilient city, highlighting how active travel can contribute. Younes and Robin added their perspectives by comparing cycling in Sweden and the Netherlands. The presentations sparked fruitful discussions, culminating in a panel that explored next steps. The session was well attended by a diverse group of field representatives. A special thanks to Maria Stenström (2030-secretariat) for her support at Frihamnsdagarna.

As the cherry on top, our delegation joined Jesper Giuliano (GoVelo) for Gothenburg’s first cargobike parade. There’s no better way to wrap up an intensive few days than enjoying a cargo bike ride with friends!

It was a true pleasure to collaborate with all the stakeholders involved. A big thank you to Anastazia Kronberg, Malin Månsson, Magnus Brink, Klara Jonsson, and their colleagues for their warm welcome. We look forward to what’s next.
