Knowledge Guest lecture Indonesia Land Transportation Polytechnic 24 February 2026 Cycling News On 13 February 2026, Prof. Dr. Ir. Rob van der Bijl (RVDB Urban Planning) and Shelley Bontje (Dutch Cycling Embassy) were invited by the Land Transportation Polytechnic in Bekasi to deliver a guest lecture: Active and public transport – The Backbone of sustainable Mobility. The invitation was extended by Intan Novianingsih, with the support of the Director of the Indonesian Polytechnic of Land Transport. Intan, who is also a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen, skillfully moderated the session after Dr. Gloriani Novita Christin (Centre for Human Resources Development on Land Transport) opened the lecture. Intan invited the guest speakers to begin with a brief introduction to the topics of active mobility and public transport. Shelley focused primarily on the role of children within a cycling culture, encouraging students to reflect on their own childhood experiences and memories of learning to cycle. Rob, meanwhile, compared various public transport systems around the world, with a particular emphasis on Asia. Following these presentations, there was an opportunity for an open discussion and questions from the audience. The students were highly engaged, posing critical questions and reflecting on their own learning experiences. The guest lecture was of course made possible by the Land Transportation Polytechnic, a big thank you for your collaboration and it was truly a pleasure to have this opportunity to exchange knowledge with your students. As the Dutch Cycling Embassy representatives facilitated an ACTIVE workshop in Bandung, wherefore representatives from the Dutch Cycling Embassy were already present in the region.
