Knowledge Ghent University is looking for a bicycle professor 31 October 2023 - Author: Rob van der Bijl Cycling News At Ghent University, Department of Geography, a new Chair of Bicycle is installed by the Flemish Government. The thematic aim of the Chair of Cycling is to support, evaluate and further develop the Flemish policy on cycling. The chair Bicycle provides for the appointment of a part-time (10%) guest professor (grade of full professor) and a 50% administrative assistant, to support the chair holder. The Bicycle Chair commences on 1 December 2023 and is for 3 years (extension is possible but depends on required funding). To fill the chair, the department is looking for a chair holder (m/f/x). ASSIGNMENT The Flemish government has entrusted the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Sciences with the Chair of Bicycle. The chair aims to support, evaluate and further develop the Flemish policy on cycling. The operation of the Chair of Cycling will be based on a theme, which will be further developed over a year to a year and a half in consultation with the chair holder and the advisory committee. The committee consists of 50% members who are officially linked to Ghent University and 50% members appointed by the Department of Mobility and Public Works. The tasks carried out by the chair (towards teaching and research) should have a strong social and scientific angle. Thus, lectures and communication will be aimed at both specialists and the general public. Publications and accessible reports and manuals should support Flemish cycling policy. The Chair of Cycling will pursue a close cooperation between all actors involved in cycling policy. Academic education. As a chair holder, you will participate in various courses in the field of Bicycle and Bicycle Policy. The chair holder will be asked to actively participate in teaching (as a guest professor in existing courses on sustainable mobility), or be involved in the development of a new course, or a micro-credential as part of courses at Ghent University and the EIT Urban Mobility. Scientific research You will develop research in the field of cycling and cycling policy. This involves working with a (one and a half) yearly theme. Themes are set out in close consultation with the supervisory committee. These could include an innovative approach to cycling safety in the broad sense (incl. subjective cycling safety), influencing cycling behaviour and stimulating bicycle use, the development of new methodologies for mapping the state of cycling infrastructure and evaluating networks, a 360°evaluation of guidelines for cycling infrastructure and various aspects of cycling policy in Flanders, international benchmarking, bicycle logistics, theme-based audits and impact measurement for bicycle traffic, the development and testing of smart technology to make cycling more comfortable and safer, etc. You can apply by sending your application letter and CV by 19 November 2023 to prof. dr.
