Exploring innovation in Utrechts region on two wheels

14 July 2025

On 11 July, the ROM Region Utrecht, Utrecht Bike Community, and Dutch Cycling Embassy co-organised a working visit for André van Schie, Deputy for Mobility and Economy for the Province of Utrecht, and Ellie Eggengoor, Nieuwegein’s Alderwoman for Mobility and Economy.

The aim was to gain deeper insight into the strength of the local cycling sector and how it contributes to the region’s innovation landscape and international positioning.

And what better way to explore the bicycle industry than by bike? The delegation toured four companies in Nieuwegein, each showcasing a different facet of the sector’s dynamism.

The first stop was Rotaris, a fast-growing startup that specialises in colour-matched bicycle paint touch-up, with over 90% of its market outside the Netherlands. Next was Fulpra, a manufacturer of heavy-duty electric cargo bikes designed for last-mile urban delivery, already expanding into multiple European markets.

At Ink Invent, the group learned about RheoLight, an award-winning pigment technology that significantly improves nighttime visibility for bicycles. Finally, they visited Armada Mobility, a long-established company providing public space infrastructure, including bicycle lockers, bicycle shelters, and railway-related street furniture.

The visit concluded with an informal roundtable discussion, joined by Dutch Cycling Embassy partners R.A. Planning, Movares, and Royal HaskoningDHV, to reflect on the challenges and opportunities for further strengthening the region’s cycling economy.
