Delegation of Indonesian Traffic Police visits Dutch Cycling Embassy’s office and discovers Utrecht.

26 November 2025

A large and enthusiastic delegation from the Indonesian Traffic Police visited the Dutch Cycling Embassy’s office on 24 November, following a week at TU Delft engaging with the Delft Road Safety courses, among others under the guidance of Teije Gorris (GO-bility).

Already well immersed in Dutch cycling culture, the delegation was particularly eager to experience it firsthand by cycling through the city. Upon arriving at Utrecht Central, they cycled to the Embassy’s office in Lombok—a neighbourhood in Utrecht whose name tellingly reflects the historical ties between the Netherlands and Indonesia. There, Rob van der Bijl (RVDB Urban Planning) delivered an insightful presentation on global cycling cultures, drawing comparisons between the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia. Rob focused on practical advice for transferring cycling knowledge, integrating cycling with active mobility, and developing safe, comfortable bicycle parking.

After the presentation and a typical Dutch-style lunch, the group set off again by bike. The tour included a visit to Fietshangar, where Ed Spiller shared his expertise on secure and user-friendly bicycle parking solutions. The delegation then explored Utrecht Central’s largest bicycle parking facility and cycled along the city’s dedicated bus lane. The day concluded with a Q&A session and traditional Indonesian snacks.

The study visit was made possible through the kind support and organisation of Fean Sarian of the Energy Academy Indonesia, Merijn Heijne of the Dutch Cyclists’ Union, Cézanne Simons and Shelley Bontje of the Dutch Cycling Embassy.
