DCE-Velowende Masterclass returns for a second edition

15 April 2025

On 7th and 8th April 2025, Velowende, in collaboration with the Dutch Cycling Embassy, hosted the second edition of its masterclass in Zurich, Switzerland. Building on the success of last year’s event, this edition once again brought together around 20 professionals eager to enhance cycling infrastructure and sustainable mobility across Switzerland.

Participants engaged in insightful lectures, discussions and practical exercises, focusing on network planning, street design, and integrating Dutch cycling principles into Swiss urban environments. This hands-on approach allowed attendees to apply key concepts to real-world scenarios, deepening their understanding of effective infrastructure design.

A diverse panel of experts contributed to the masterclass, including Patrick Rérat, Ursula Wyss, Michael Liebi, Yvonne Ehrensberger, Nicola Kugelmeier and DCE network expert Elke Schimmel of november:city. Their combined Dutch-Swiss expertise fostered an engaging exchange of knowledge, ensuring a well-rounded approach to sustainable cycling solutions.

As integral part of the programme, a guided cycling tour through Zurich provided participants with firsthand insights into the city’s current cycling infrastructure, highlighting both strengths and opportunities for improvement. This immersive experience reinforced the practical application of Dutch design principles.

Beyond technical insights, the masterclass emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders—urban planners, policymakers, and advocacy groups—to create impactful cycling infrastructure. Discussions explored strategies for political support and fostering a culture of cooperation.

The programme also featured a networking dinner, allowing attendees to share ideas, build professional relationships, and strengthen ties within the cycling and urban mobility community.

Looking Ahead

With continued support from institutions such as ETH Zurich, ProVelo, Velokonferenz, Université de Lausanne, and OST – Ostschweizer Fachhochschule, this initiative remains a driving force for cycling infrastructure improvements in Switzerland. Plans for an alumni community and follow-ups will ensure ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange.

By applying Dutch cycling principles, Swiss cities are moving toward more accessible, comfortable, and sustainable cycling networks. The DCE is excited to continue contributing to this transformation.
