DCE holds Masterclass with Velowende in Zurich

12 September 2024

On 10-11 September 2024, the organisation Velowende, together with the DCE, hosted a transformative masterclass dedicated to the application of Dutch cycling principles in Switzerland, with the ambitious aim of redeveloping Switzerland’s cycling networks, enhancing user experience, and fostering a culture of sustainable urban mobility.

This two-day event brought together around 20 participants from diverse professional backgrounds, all united by a common goal: to improve cycling infrastructure and promote sustainable transportation in Switzerland.

Highlights

Lectures and practical exercises The masterclass featured a series of insightful lectures that delved into the core principles of Dutch cycling infrastructure. Experts shared their knowledge on network planning, street design, and the integration of cycling facilities into urban environments. Participants engaged in practical exercises, working in groups on real case studies from Zurich. These hands-on activities allowed attendees to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding of effective cycling infrastructure design.

Combined Dutch-Swiss expertise During the two-day event, a range of experts gave input, including Patrick Rérat, Ursula Wyss, Michael Liebi, Yvonne Ehrensberger, Viktoria Herzog, Stephanie Stotz, Kathrin Hager, Elke Schimmel and Emma Stubbe. Bringing together a diverse range of Swiss and Dutch experts, with both academic and professional backgrounds, fostered a rich exchange of innovative ideas and best practices. This collaborative approach not only enhanced the depth of insights but also ensured a comprehensive understanding of sustainable cycling solutions tailored to local contexts.

Cycling tour A guided cycling tour through Zurich provided participants with a firsthand experience of the city’s existing cycling infrastructure. This tour highlighted both the strengths and areas for improvement within Zurich’s current network, offering valuable insights into how Dutch design principles could be implemented to enhance the city’s cycling experience.

Hardware, software, orgware A significant portion of the masterclass was dedicated to the importance of communication and cooperation in the successful implementation of cycling measures. Discussions emphasized the need for collaboration between various stakeholders, including local authorities, urban planners, and cycling advocacy groups. Strategies for gaining political support and fostering a culture of cooperation were also explored, underscoring the multifaceted approach required to achieve sustainable cycling infrastructure.

Networking dinner The event also included a networking dinner, providing a relaxed environment for participants to connect, share experiences, and build professional relationships. This informal setting facilitated the exchange of ideas and fostered a sense of community among attendees.

Support and follow-up activities The masterclass was supported by a range of organizations dedicated to promoting cycling and sustainable urban mobility, including ETH Zurich, ProVelo, Velokonferenz, Schweizerischer Städteverband, Université de Lausanne, and OST – Ostschweizer Fachhochschule. Their involvement ensured a comprehensive and well-rounded program, drawing on a wealth of expertise and resources.

Looking ahead, follow-up activities for alumni are being planned to maintain momentum and continue the exchange of knowledge and best practices. These activities aim to support participants in implementing the lessons learned during the masterclass in their respective contexts, further advancing the cause of improved cycling infrastructure in Switzerland.

This masterclass not only provided valuable education and practical experience but also strengthened the network of professionals committed to enhancing cycling infrastructure. By applying Dutch design principles, Zurich and other Swiss cities can look forward to more cohesive, comfortable, safe and attractive cycling networks, contributing to healthier and more liveable urban environments. The DCE looks forward to being able to contribute further to this transformation!
