Belgian and Dutch experts exchange knowledge on continuous cycle routes from Tilburg to Breda

9 October 2025

On September 30th of 2025, 35 cycling and mobility experts from Belgium and the Netherlands gathered in Tilburg for an inspiring study visit along the F58 continous cycle route to Breda. The event, organized by Tour de Force and the Dutch Cycling Embassy, in collaboration with the municipalities of Tilburg and Breda, focused on sharing knowledge about the implementation, participation, and promotion of continuous cycle routes, cycle highways, and fast cycle routes.

The study vist  began in Tilburg, where participants were welcomed by Marjolein Scheepers (Mobility Policy Officer, Municipality of Tilburg), Bart Heijnen (Cycling Network Team Leader, Tour de Force), and Shelley Bontje (Knowledge & Partnership Manger, Dutch Cycling Embassy).

The first leg of the study visit centered on the realization and design of cycle highways, featuring insights from Joris van Damme (Project Leader Cycle Highways, Province of Flemish Brabant), Marjolein Scheepers, and Rob van Nuenen (Mobility Program Coordinator). Discussions touched on effective infrastructure planning.

After lunch at ’t Vermaeck, roughly halfway along the 25-kilometer route, the focus shifted to participation and public engagement. Speakers Pieter Dudal (Project Engineer, Beliris) and Martijn Geervliet (Mobility Advisor, Municipality of Breda) shared examples of how community involvement can strengthen local ownership and long-term success of cycle routes. Pierre Beerens (designer of the route) and Koen van Oers (project lead of the route) supported in guiding the final leg of the cycling ride.

The afternoon session addressed promotion and communication strategies for encouraging more people to use fast cycle routes. Nikki Hemelaars (Interprovincial Coordinator, Province of Flemish Brabant) and Benjamin Groenewolt (Mobility Policy Advisor, Municipality of Enschede) emphasized the importance of communication as well as citizen engagement in promoting cycling as a daily mode of transport.

The group concluded the study visit at Breda University of Applied Sciences, where former professor Ineke Spapé hosted the closing session -by providing a challenging quiz- and informal networking reception.
