Cycling Experts Lieven Nijs Lieven is a policy maker in sustainable transport for the City of Rotterdam. He mainly focuses on the strategic development of policies and visions to increase the modal share of walking and cycling (active mobility) in the city. In his view, three aspects are crucial for the delivery of cycling infrastructure: Date-driven decision making (through transport modelling, quantitative assessments and measurable indicators), stakeholders engagement (from advocacy groups to strategic partners), and network planning and connectivity (cohesive and connected, with a hierarchy and integrated with other modes and key destinations). Before moving to the Netherlands, he worked 5 years in the United Kingdom (City of Liverpool, AECOM), and 5 years in the United Arab Emirates (where he graduated in Urban Planning, with a focus on Transportation, from the American University of Sharjah). Originally from Brussels, he also has a BSc in History from the University of Ghent. Lieven is familiar with a variety of (planning) culture’s and is therefore well-suited to bring Dutch mobility planning expertise to the world. At the same time he is keen to continue learning by others himself as well.
