Knowledge ThinkBike Workshop Dubai, United Arab Emirates 27 February 2025 General From February 18–19, the Dutch Cycling Embassy (DCE) traveled to the United Arab Emirates to host a ThinkBike Workshop for Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). This workshop followed a 2023 workshop organized in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in preparation for COP 28. In recent decades, Dubai has undergone tremendous change. Growing rapidly from a small port city to a bustling metropolis in a short period of time, the city grew up alongside the automobile leading to car-oriented infrastructure that is hostile to active modes of transportation. As the city grapples with continued growth in the face of climate change in a desert environment, the Roads and Transport Authority is shifting its priorities to better serve active and sustainable travel modes. The DCE was joined by Lieven Nijs (City of Rotterdam) and Niels van Oort (TU Delft) who provided their expertise on the strategic development of active mobility, network design, and multi-modal connectivity. The RTA participants came away from the ThinkBike Workshop feeling inspired to bring Dutch-style planning practices to Dubai. According to surveys conducted of the participants before and after the Workshop, participants came away from the experience with increases in their proficiency across all areas of planning surveyed (i.e. supporting multimodal connectivity, comfort, safety, understanding user needs). The DCE is excited to see how the RTA is able to implement lessons learned into their planning practice going forward, and to watch Dubai grow into a more sustainable and active city.
