Sustainable Transport Week 2024 Webinar

5 November 2024

On November 5, the DCE had the pleasure of joining the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) for the 2024 edition of Sustainable Transport Week. Project Manager Shelley Bontje represented the DCE in a session entitled “Urban, Active, Safe: Strategic Planning for Bike-Friendly Cities”, where she presented the DCE’s ThinkBike workshops. Shelley shared insights from recent workshops held in Mysore, India, and Maputo, Mozambique, providing an overview of the workshop structure and how the contents are received by participants.

To illustrate this, Shelley shared a video about Mysore’s ThinkBike workshop, offering the audience a firsthand look at the process. She concluded by sharing a brief history of cycling in the Netherlands, highlighting how learning from one another’s experiences can help create better urban environments.

In the same session, our collaborators from GIZ Albania presented recent mobility initiatives in Tirana, where the capital has made significant strides towards reducing car dependency and prioritizing space for cyclists and pedestrians. Their presentation reinforced Shelley’s message on the importance of international collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Both presentations sparked considerable interest from the audience, sparking many questions about Dutch and Albanian cycling cultures. Despite the differences in history, culture, and geography, these two countries demonstrate how finding common ground can help create world-class mobility systems and more livable cities.
