Knowledge ACTIVE meets ParanaBici, Curitiba, Brazil 16 December 2024 - Author: Elke Schimmel General From 27th to 29th November, the Dutch Cycling Embassy (DCE) and the Dutch Consulate in São Paulo, in partnership with the State of Paraná, hosted the first ACTIVE workshop in Brazil. The seminar began with an inspiring presentation by Elke Schimmel (November:City) and Shelley Bontje (DCE) on how (bi)cycles can help transform cities into sustainable, safe, socially equitable, and healthier environments. Following this, State Deputy Goura, the initiator of Paraná Bici, highlighted the importance of learning from Dutch and other international approaches. However, he stressed the need to adapt these inspirations to local contexts rather than simply replicating them. The subsequent workshop sessions emphasised prioritising cycling as a mode of transport rather than a sport. The success of such initiatives lies in integrated urban planning, political commitment, and fostering a robust cycling culture focused on efficiency, health, and social equity. These principles are underpinned by the CROW design guidelines: Directness, Safety, Comfort, Cohesion, and Attractiveness. The workshop stood out for the dynamic engagement of its participants, many of whom were deeply involved in the topics discussed. Their enthusiasm was evident through the thought-provoking questions they posed and the insights they shared, creating an environment of lively exchange and collaboration. This active participation not only enriched the discussions but also underscored the shared commitment to advancing cycling and sustainable urban mobility. The energy and passion of those in attendance made the event uniquely impactful and inspiring for all involved. During the Paraná Bici week, the Dutch Cycling Embassy also launched its Inspirational Practices booklet in Portuguese, offering further resources for advancing active mobility. The workshop was organised in close collaboration with the State of Paraná, the Dutch Consulate in São Paulo, and the ACTIVE initiative, with generous support from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
