Veloforum in Switzerland

10 June 2024

On May 23rd, Veloforum took place in Zürich, Switzerland. The Dutch Cycling Embassy’s Emma Stubbe was excited to attend and learn about current developments in Switzerland. Veloforum is a national platform for cycling and combines the topics of leisure, mobility, sport, technology, and transformation. Switzerland is on its way to becoming a cycling nation and introduced new best practices during Veloforum.

Switzerland’s Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) launched its new program, ‘The Velo Roadmap’. Inspired by the Netherlands’ Tour de Force, the Velo Roadmap is intended to make the activities of various actors in Switzerland visible and improve coordination and cooperation. Its mission is to advance with well-coordinated measures, direct communication, and short distances between the stakeholders and the federal government.

Another celebratory milestone during Veloforum was the release of “Velowende: Für eine lebendige Stadt” written by Patrick Rétrat, Ursula Wyss, Michael Liebi, and Christine Lehmann. The book encompasses the opportunities that Switzerland faces right now and the importance of a transport transition towards more cycling. Highlighting best practices from the Netherlands, ‘Velowende’ provides the essential ingredients needed for success: an understanding of how transport works, the right arguments and answers, and tips and tricks for successful implementation in Switzerland. The DCE is proud to support the book and is excited to announce a great collaboration with the authors in the near future.

During the visit, the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences and the DCE announced that they will be working together on sharing best practices in forms of educational trainings. We look forward to this collaboration and to our next visit to Switzerland!

Project manager Emma Stubbe spoke with SRF in an interview about Switzerland’s potential.

“In the Netherlands, we are quite eager to experiment and implement pilot projects quickly. And most of the time, those who were skeptical before are also quickly convinced as soon as they have experienced for themselves how nice it is to cycle safely and comfortably together on a traffic-calmed street.”
