University of Victoria’s Sustainable Cities Field School

13 June 2023

On Wednesday, June 7th, 2023, the Dutch Cycling Embassy hosted a group of students from the University of Victoria, who were participating in the fifth week of a six-week study abroad program entitled the “Sustainable Cities Field School”.

Led by Professor Cameron Owens, the group of about 25 students rode their bikes to the Dutch Cycling Embassy headquarters from their home base near the Utrecht city centre. There, Communications Manager Chris Bruntlett provided an overview of cycling in the Netherlands, the role of the Dutch Cycling Embassy overseas, and specific examples of North American cities attempting to transfer these policies and ideas to their context.

Following a lengthy question-and-answer session, the students hopped back on their bikes, and took a two-hour tour of Utrecht’s cycling infrastructure led by Chris. We wish these students the best of luck in their challenge of applying these lessons to Canadian cities. If you’re interested in learning more about the study abroad program, click here.
