ThinkBike Workshop in Charlotte, NC
23 May 2025From May 20–22, 2025, the Dutch Cycling Embassy facilitated a ThinkBike Workshop in partnership with the City of Charlotte’s Department of Transportation (CDOT), and VHB. The workshop was guided by Dutch experts from Goudappel and supported by public sector insights from the Arnhem-Nijmegen Green Metropolitan Region.
Over three days, planners, engineers, policymakers, advocates, and mobility professionals (incl. CATS and Sustain Charlotte) worked together to reimagine two key corridors: Central Avenue and South Boulevard. Participants explored the full spectrum of cycling policy and design—from network planning to detailed cross-section and intersection layouts. Tools such as Goudappel’s MOVE-meter helped visualize data-driven possibilities and assess the potential impact of proposed changes.
Working both on foot and by bike, teams assessed existing conditions along the corridors and developed context-specific design interventions. These included protected cycle lanes and improved intersection designs that prioritize safety and accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. The hands-on approach fostered new ideas and helped deepen local understanding – not just of infrastructure, but of the cultural and organizational changes needed to support everyday cycling.

The third day concluded with final presentations showcasing integrated design concepts for Central Avenue and South Boulevard. These were more than illustrations, they represented practical visions for a more connected and accessible Charlotte.
The workshop wrapped up with the Charlotte Bike Awards, hosted by Sustain Charlotte and Trips for Kids at Birdsong Brewing Co. The evening featured a celebration of local cycling efforts, a screening of the Dutch documentary Together We Cycle, and a panel discussion reflecting on the week’s key insights and future directions.
The ThinkBike Workshop in Charlotte facilitated the exchange of knowledge, experience, and ambition – a great start and foundation for continued progress toward a cycle-friendlier Charlotte.
