New Zealand Initiative Explores Dutch Cycling in The Hague with DCE

27 June 2025

On 26th June, 2025, the Dutch Cycling Embassy accompanied a delegation from the New Zealand Initiative on a guided cycling tour through The Hague. The visit offered the group a first-hand experience of the Netherlands’ cycling infrastructure and cycle-friendly urban planning.

The ride was complemented by a short talk and Q&A session led by Emma Stubbe from the Dutch Cycling Embassy, who shared insights into the evolution of cycling in the Netherlands, from grassroots activism to national policy and innovative infrastructure and urban planning. The session encouraged the group to reflect on how cycling in the Netherlands feels, what contributes to a sense of safety and comfort, and what barriers might exist to replicating such systems in New Zealand.

The group completed the ride with enthusiasm and curiosity, and then engaged in lively discussions over dinner, expressing their interest for continued dialogue and collaboration.

The Dutch Cycling Embassy looks forward to supporting further exchanges and inspiring more international partners to embrace cycling as a tool for liveable, sustainable cities.
