Exploring Cycling in Vilnius during Urban Mobility Days

29 September 2025

On the eve of this year’s Urban Mobility Days, the Dutch Cycling Embassy met with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vilnius to exchange insights on promoting active mobility. The conversation underlined shared ambitions to make cycling a natural choice for everyday travel.

In the afternoon, DCE’s Director, Skadi Tirpak, joined a guided cycling tour showcasing Vilnius’ recent achievements in improving cycling conditions. The city has expanded its network to around 170 kilometres of quality cycle paths — much of it with recognisable red asphalt — and introduced “cycle streets” (similar to Dutch fietsstraten) under updated traffic regulations. Secure bike parking is also on the rise, with 18 new facilities already installed by Judu and more planned in collaboration with local communities. The municipality is further aiming to ensure that most residents live within 250 metres of a cycle path.

These efforts highlight how Vilnius is transforming into a more cycle-friendly city and how Dutch experience continues to serve as a valuable source of inspiration.
