Knowledge Dutch insights on cycling infrastructure presented at Rio Construction Summit 28 September 2025 Cycling News This September, the Dutch Cycling Embassy (DCE) participated in the Rio Construction Summit, where global leaders came together to discuss the future of the construction industry. The event explored key themes such as innovation and efficiency in construction, investment and infrastructure development, and the role of human capital in shaping more sustainable cities. Representing the DCE, Shelley Bontje, Knowledge & Partnership Manager, contributed to the program with Dutch perspectives on active mobility and urban development. Together with Isabela Ledo and Warner Vonk, she co-hosted the workshop “How to Design Functional and Integrated Cycle Paths for Cities”. The session highlighted Dutch best practices for creating safe, connected, and inclusive cycling infrastructure that supports healthier and more livable cities. In addition, Shelley joined the roundtable “Active Mobility and City Development: The Dutch Case”, where she shared how cycling has become an integral part of urban planning in the Netherlands, and how similar approaches can inspire Brazilian cities to embrace sustainable mobility. On the sidelines of the summit, DCE engaged in valuable conversations with among others Firjan, Transporte Ativo, the Consulate-general of The Netherlands in Rio de Janeiro, and the city of Niterói. A highlight was exploring Rio’s cycling culture first-hand during a ride with Rio by Bike Tours. We thank Firjan for the kind invitation and the opportunity to contribute Dutch knowledge to Brazil’s discussions on building smarter, healthier, and more inclusive cities.
