Knowledge Dutch Cycling Embassy Contributes to Smart City Mobility Council Study Visit 22 September 2026 Cycling News On Monday, 21 September, 2026, the Dutch Cycling Embassy contributed to the Smart City Mobility Council’s study visit to the Netherlands, welcoming a delegation of 23 transportation, mobility and public-sector professionals from the United States to Utrecht. Hosted at the Movares‘ Utrecht office, the afternoon brought together different perspectives on Dutch cycling, mobility planning and the role of cycling within a wider multimodal transport system. International Relations Manager Chris Bruntlett from the Dutch Cycling Embassy opened the programme by sharing insights into the Dutch approach to cycling and the development of cycling as an integral part of urban mobility. His presentation highlighted how infrastructure, policy, urban planning and everyday cycling culture come together to create a system in which cycling can play a significant role in getting around Dutch cities. The programme continued with presentations from Roelof Hellemans of the European Mobility Alliance and Remco de Blaaij of Movares, offering further perspectives on mobility planning, infrastructure and the practical challenges of designing and delivering transport systems in a growing urban environment. The presentations were followed by a walking tour of Utrecht’s Stationsplein bicycle parking facility. With space for 12,500 bicycles, it is the largest bicycle parking facility in the world. Located directly beneath Utrecht Central Station, the facility demonstrates how cycling can be integrated with public transport at a major mobility hub. The visit offered the delegation an opportunity to move beyond presentations and see Dutch mobility solutions in practice — from the planning and design principles behind cycling infrastructure to the everyday integration of bicycle and rail travel.
