“Cycling Towards a Greener Future” in The Hague

26 March 2024

On the afternoon of March 13th, 2024, the Dutch Cycling Embassy partnered with the Embassy of Canada on a special event entitled “Cycling Towards a Greener Future”. Taking place at Nutshuis in The Hague, the seminar featured cycling advocates and sustainability experts from the Netherlands who discussed and shared best practices with regards to working on promoting cycling, including in North America. Through expert lenses, the event discussed how to implement sustainable urban practices and development, active transportation, and the advantages of integrating Dutch cycling practices into North American and international contexts.

Moderated by Dutch Cycling Embassy International Relations Manager Chris Bruntlett, the event was opened with remarks from Hugh Adsett, Ambassador of Canada to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The keynote speaker was Deputy Mayor Arjen Kapteijns, Alderman for Mobility in The Hague. Following a Q&A with the Alderman, there were remarks from Aoife Fleming, She Leads Here Champion and co-founder of World’s Youth Climate Justice.

The main panel discussion included several experts from the Dutch Cycling Embassy network, including Maurits Lopes Cardozo of Bike-minded, Melissa Bruntlett of Royal HaskoningDHV, Paul van de Coevering of Breda University of Applied Sciences, and Canmanie Ponnambalam of TNO. Following a short break, the attendees broke into small groups to discuss the ideas presented, and then reported back to the larger group. The event was then closed and everyone convened for networking drinks in the downstairs bar.

We’d like to thank the Embassy of Canada for this wonderful opportunity to discuss sustainable mobility with an audience of professionals and diplomats in The Hague!
