Cycling Tour During Urbanism Next Europe Conference

9 October 2024

On Wednesday, October 9th, 2024, the Dutch Cycling Embassy hosted a special bicycle tour of Amsterdam for attendees of the Urbanism Next Europe Conference. Organised by the University of Oregon and TU Delft, the conference takes place all week at the Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky.

The group of about 20 engineers, planners, academics, and policymakers—from various locations including Minneapolis and Portland—were enthusiastic about experiencing Amsterdam’s famous cycling infrastructure and culture. International Relations Manager Chris Bruntlett was more than happy to oblige, and after a short opening where he introduced our expert network and international mandate, the delegation took to the streets of Amsterdam.

Highlights of the five kilometre ride included the bicycle parking underneath the harbour at Amsterdam Centraal Station. We also visited Jodenbreestraat—the site of the freeway fight that changed the course of the city’s history—and Alexanderplein—a busy intersection where City engineers had removed the traffic lights, with positive results. We hope this eye-opening experience inspires their push to improve conditions for cyclists in their respective cities.
