Study Visit: AGFS NRW explores cycling connections between Arnhem and Nijmegen

22 September 2025

On 18 September 2025, the Dutch Cycling Embassy welcomed a delegation from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft fußgänger- und fahrradfreundlicher Städte, Gemeinden und Kreise in Nordrhein-Westfalen (AGFS NRW) for a one-day study visit cycling from Arnhem to Nijmegen. Participants included representatives from various municipalities (Kommunen) in North Rhine-Westphalia that are part of the AGFS NRW network. Together, we explored how Dutch expertise in cycling infrastructure and mobility planning can inspire ongoing efforts in Germany.

Cycling the RijnWaalpad

After a short welcome in Arnhem, the participants attended a presentation and discussion led by two experts from the Dutch Cycling Embassy network: Sjors van Duren (Royal HaskoningDHV), who shared lessons learned from planning and implementing Dutch Radschnellverbindungen (high-speed cycling routes) and explained how they fit into broader mobility networks. Ruben Loendersloot (Loendersloot International), who highlighted practical design aspects and the role of cycling in shaping sustainable, people-friendly cities.

The group then set off on bicycles to experience the RijnWaalpad, the fast cycling path connecting Arnhem and Nijmegen. Divided into two groups, the participants rode approximately 20 km, stopping along the way to discuss design choices, network integration, and local user experiences.

The ride concluded in Nijmegen, where participants gathered for a final reflection round. Here, they exchanged impressions, asked further questions, and discussed possible follow-up collaborations between Dutch and German partners.

Strengthening Dutch–German collaboration

Study visits like this one are at the heart of the Dutch Cycling Embassy’s mission: to share knowledge, foster international exchange, and support cities and regions in making cycling a natural part of everyday mobility.

We thank AGFS NRW and all participating municipalities for their enthusiastic engagement. Special thanks go to our experts, Sjors van Duren and Ruben Loendersloot, for their contributions.

We look forward to continuing the dialogue and exploring next steps together.
