High-Level Indian Delegation Explores Dutch Cycling and Mobility Innovations
24 April 2025On April 23 and 24, the Dutch Cycling Embassy was pleased to support a technical visit to the Netherlands by a high-level delegation from India, organized by GIZ India and supported by CITIES FORUM. The delegation included senior officials from Indian transport authorities, urban planning departments, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), all of whom are engaged in shaping the future of sustainable mobility in India.
The two-day Dutch leg of the “Sustainable Mobility Mission 2025” kicked off in Amsterdam, where Sustainable Solutions and Arup hosted the group at the Mövenpick Hotel. The morning featured a presentation on the Dutch cycling culture, followed by an engaging walking tour through Amsterdam’s active mobility highlights. The walking tour showcased multimodal infrastructure, from tram rides and bicycle streets (fietsstraten) to the pedestrian-friendly spaces of Museumplein. This on-the-ground experience allowed the delegation to observe firsthand how the Netherlands integrates active modes of transport into everyday urban life.
On April 24, the delegation traveled to Utrecht, where they were welcomed at De Utrechter Stadsbrasserie en Bar. In partnership with NS (Dutch Railways) and triple Joy, the visit included a technical tour of Utrecht Central Station and its award-winning bike parking facilities. The program continued with triple Joy highlighting the importance of community engagement and communication in realising cycling-friendly cities.
This mission aimed to inspire and inform India’s national and local urban mobility strategies by showcasing best practices from across Europe. Alongside visits to Berlin and Barcelona, the delegation’s time in the Netherlands emphasised the critical role of cycling, walking, and integrated mobility hubs in creating liveable and future-ready cities.
We were honoured to contribute to this exchange of knowledge and look forward to continued collaboration with our Indian counterparts and global partners in advancing sustainable mobility.
