DCE joins CEDEUS webinar

15 May 2024

On Monday, 13th May 2024, the DCE’s Emma Stubbe provided a short presentation on cycling activism and societal change for an online panel discussion titled “Chile is not the Netherlands – what can Chilean justice movements learn from the Dutch experience?” organised by the Center of Urban Sustainable Development (CEDEUS) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, with the support of the Netherlands Embassy in Chile.

Paula Galilea of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Chile kicked off with a short introduction on how the Dutch fought to build their cycling culture in the 70s. Subsequently, Emma’s presentation dove into how crises were catalysed into societal upheaval, and what this activism was able to achieve for the Netherlands. This was followed by input on the topic of civil society’s role in achieving change by Carolina Ramos Fallú, Senior International Mobility and Transport Consultant at the consultancy Panteia.

The panel was preceded by a screening of “Together We Cycle,” a documentary produced by Nieuw & Verbeterd, as preparation for the aforementioned discussion session on just mobility. This panel marked the start of a series of participatory events on the topics of activism for mobility justice, gender, intermodality, and (street) violence.

The DCE would like to thank Lake Sagaris of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile for the opportunity to participate in the interesting and lively discussion.
