Knowledge Beijing Seeks Active Mobility Inspiration in the Netherlands 28 October 2024 Cycling News On 14th October, a small delegation from Beijing’s Transport Commission visited the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in The Hague, Netherlands with the purpose to exchange information on active mobility policy. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Odilia Knap (Deputy Director of International Affairs), Arlette van Gilst (Director Active Mobility) and Francesco Montesano (Senior Policy Advisor International Affairs and Coordinating Officer for China). Shelley Bontje, of the Dutch Cycling Embassy introduced the group to the rich history and culture of Dutch cycling. This was followed by an in-depth presentation from Lucas Harms (Coordinating Policy Officer Active Mobility) on national active mobility policies, which sparked engaging discussions on planning for non-motorised transportation systems supported by Sonja Munnix (Senior Advisor, Dutch Enterprise Agency). As a result on the presentations, questions arose on various topics related to shared bikes, bike parking and challenges in terms of traffic behaviour. Also, the delegation from Beijing gave an in-depth presentation on active mobility policy on their side. Afterwards, the delegation was treated to a typical Dutch experience, with the arrival of the iconic green-and-yellow Haagse bikes. Following lunch, the group continued their visit by bike, exploring key highlights of The Hague’s integrated mobility approach.
