Are you passionate about cycling and international cooperation? Do you want to help promote Dutch cycling knowledge worldwide? Join our internship program and gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, international environment.
About the Dutch Cycling Embassy
We are a public-private network that shares Dutch cycling expertise with the world. Cities and organizations from all over the globe contact us to learn from the Dutch expertise and technology as the number one cycling country.
Our network includes companies, research institutes, NGOs, and governments. We intermediate between parties and host delegations, organize study tours, and connect international partners with Dutch solutions. Our team is based in Utrecht and includes colleagues from the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Australia and beyond.
We’re often on our bikes—so don’t expect to be behind a desk all day.
Your Role
The Dutch Cycling Embassy (DCE) offers internships twice a year, starting in February and September, with two positions available each round in the international internship program.
With the program, you will be assigned to a project. We always try to find a relevant project that matches both the needs of DCE and the strengths of the intern. Past projects have included:
- supporting study visits and developing materials;
- improving the user experience of our website and community platform;
- preparing for international conferences and events.
Your day-to-day tasks may include handling international requests, supporting and organizing delegation visits, facilitating team meetings and/or professionalizing and standardizing marketing and communication materials.
Every day at the Dutch Cycling Embassy is different. Alongside your overarching project, you’ll gain experience in various roles. You’ll also connect with many world-leading cycling and urban planning organizations. Our work not only contributes significantly to urban mobility, road safety and emission reductions, but also has positive impacts on the economy, social inclusion and health.
What We’re Looking For
It is most important that you are eager to learn and to start projects, especially related to cycling or urban planning. Other aspects that we are looking for:
- You’re currently enrolled in higher education (HBO/WO);
- You speak fluent English; other languages like German or French are a plus;
- Speaking Dutch is helpful, but not required;
- You jump at the opportunity to write a blog or report;
- Meeting new people excites you;
Don’t meet every single requirement? We still encourage you to express your interest — we’d love to hear what you can bring to the team.
We expect interns to be available for approximately six months and to live in the Netherlands during the internship so you can fully join our team. Please note we cannot provide visas or relocation support.
What We Offer
In our internship program you will see all the ins and outs of working at DCE. You will have at least monthly meetings with your mentor at DCE, determining or evaluating your development goals.
- A dynamic and international work environment;
- Room for your own ideas and initiatives;
- Personal guidance from experienced project managers;
- Option to work on a small study assignment (in consultation), most of the time you are expected to learn by working along in the organisation;
- Internship allowance.
At the Dutch Cycling Embassy, we believe in the power of diversity. We welcome everyone, regardless of background, gender, age, sexual orientation, or disability. We strive for a work environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
Our office is located at Niasstraat 6D in Utrecht, just 10 minutes from Utrecht Central Station. We work from the office two days per week; the rest of the time it is up to you.
