New Bike Parking in Amsterdam Noord

Cover

On April 10th, the DCE attended the opening of a new bike parking facility in Amsterdam Noord.

A few weeks ago, we wrote about how Dutch rail operator NS were investing in increasing the availability of bicycle parking, service, and rentals, in order to increase train ridership (and revenue). They aren’t the only public transport agency in the Netherlands doing so.

On April 10th, 2019, we were lucky enough to attend the grand opening of a brand new “fietsenstalling” (“bike parking facility”) at the Amsterdam Noord Metro Station, a project financed by the Amsterdam Transport Region and the City of Amsterdam. As the northern terminus of Amsterdam Metro’s Route 52 (North-South Line), which opened in July 2018, the station connects 42,500 passengers per day with the city centre and southern boroughs.

The fietsenstalling, which has no fewer than 1,300 bicycle parking spaces, was designed by architect Wienke Scheltens from studioSK, a subsidary of Dutch Cycling Embassy member Movares. Despite being located in the station’s basement, the facility is incredibly bright, due to the light elements contained on both its walls and ceilings. The luminous ‘smart frames’ on the ceiling contain integrated sensors that detect the number of free spaces in each row. This number of available spots is then displayed digitally on frosted glass panels at the end of each rack, which also include unique motifs of local birds, to help users correctly locate their row.

In addition to the regular “doubled-stacked” configuration, dedicated cargo bike parking is provided, as well as special charging outlets for electric bicycles. In order to encourage regular turnover, and discourage customers from storing their bikes for long periods of time—a problem prevalent in train stations across the country—the City of Amsterdam decided to make the first 24 hours free, and then apply a small fee for each additional day.
