Knowledge Transforming Transportation 2025 18 March 2025 Cycling News Founded in 2003 and co-hosted by the World Bank and WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, Transforming Transportation is the leading global conference on sustainable mobility in developing countries, addressing both climate and development goals. This annual forum brings together innovators and decision-makers, ranging from policymakers and CEOs to researchers and advocates, who are shaping the future of transport. Over two days of technical sessions and plenaries, more than 150 speakers join thousands of participants in Washington, D.C., and online to exchange knowledge, scale solutions, and build partnerships that drive progress in sustainable transport. This year’s edition kicked off on March 10 with a morning cycling tour around Washington, D.C.’s National Mall – an energizing way to start a week focused on advancing sustainable mobility. Organized by WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities in collaboration with global partners, the ride highlighted cycling’s role in creating livable cities and set the stage for discussions on practical, people-centered transport solutions. The Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management contributed to these conversations as a panelist in the session “Boosting the Appeal and Financial Viability of Active Transport.” Discussions centered on unlocking investments, scaling active mobility adoption, and ensuring that cycling infrastructure is not only safe and efficient but also financially sustainable. Throughout the event, the alignment of policy, finance, and innovation remained a central theme. As cities worldwide prepare for COP30 in Belém, discussions underscored the urgency of turning commitments into action—embedding active mobility in national and urban transport strategies. By sharing best practices and strengthening international collaboration, ambitions can translate into concrete progress, making cycling a cornerstone of transport today and in the future.
