ThinkBike Workshop Reno, Nevada

30 September 2022

In September 2022, the Dutch Cycling Embassy and the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance organized a ThinkBike Workshop in Reno, Nevada. Dutch experts Jasper Homrighausen (Royal HaskoningDHV) and Dick van Veen (Dickvanveen Street Design Public Space) shared their knowledge and expertise about cycling goals, mobility hubs, design principles, intersection design, and much more. The attendees of the workshop were from several layers of government, private institutions, and even the Mayor of Reno partly joined the workshop!

Next to the discussions, presentations, and break out groups, we had a few other events as well. The attendees took the Dutch on a bike tour around Reno to show the projects they have been working on, the current bottle necks, and routes they envision for the future. On the first night we hosted a public screening of the documentary ‘Together We Cycle’ to show the cycling history in the Netherlands. Afterwards we had a very interesting discussion and a raffle sponsored by the local Patagonia store. To mark the end of the ThinkBike Workshop, we invited everyone in Reno for a final presentation and to discuss the results and ideas that were created in only three days. During the workshop we have set many ambitious goals that will lead to a healthier, happier, and more sustainable city.

The visit of the Dutch Cycling Embassy to Reno was a milestone for our community and a rare opportunity to not only learn from international expertise but to envision how that expertise can be applied successfully at the street level for the safety of our community and to improve our health. Community interest and the interest of leadership from the RTC, City, and State were also inspiring. Your visit definitely had an impact on Reno and there are a lot of new projects in the works that will hopefully take into account what we learned and is presented in the DCE booklet. Your kindness, understanding of our challenges, and professional expertise are second to none. – Kyril Plaskon, TMBA

We all believe the workshop was a great success and we hope the results will help Reno to become a cycling city! If you are interested in the results of workshop, feel free to reach out to the Dutch Cycling Embassy.
