Knowledge Seminar in collaboration with Black Country Transport, United Kingdom 7 February 2023 Cycling News On the 6th of February, 2023, Sjors van Duren and Philip John (Royal HaskoningDHV) co-hosted workshops together with local representatives of Wolverhampton City Council during a one-day seminar organized by Black Country Transport, in collaboration with the Dutch Cycling Embassy an initiated and supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Kingdom. The seminar started with a lunch and a welcome panel moderated by Phil Jones, Technical Advisor to the West Midlands Cycling and Walking Commissioner. Tessel van Essen, Senior Commercial Attaché of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Kingdom followed with an inspiring welcome. Whereafter, Shelley Bontje introduced and explained the existing and function of the Dutch Cycling Embassy. Adam Tranter, West Midlands Cycling & Walking Commissioner follow-up with a keynote sharing very insights full perspectives on cycling in the Midlands and sharing his take aways while learning from the Dutch. After the plenary panel, the about 30 participants joined two workshops. One workshop focused on an in-depth look at junctions in the Black Country, workshopping solutions to potential difficulty in accommodating segregated cycling infrastructure. The other workshops focused on road safety and constrained space. During this workshop participants looked at how to accommodate cyclists safely in the Black Country region’s roads, with a particular focus on solutions to stretches of roads with limited space. A plenary wrap-up session focused on questions from the audience, among others about funding schemes for cycling infrastructure as well as discussing the Dutch perspective on e-cycles development. One of the participants concluded the session by thanking the Dutch experts and acknowledging their honesty on how cycle developments in the Netherlands wasn’t always easy. The participants felt empowered, supported and enthusiastically enriched!
