Premier of ‘Rotterdam Fietst’

14 June 2024

On World Bicycle Day, June 3rd, the premiere of the 17-minute short film “Rotterdam Fietst” (Rotterdam Cycles) took place at a cinema in Rotterdam.

Driven by a passionate commitment to creating a city that is safe and beneficial for children, Willem-Frederik Metzeaar, the chairman of the Fietsersbond Rotterdam+Regio, aimed to produce a short film highlighting the vital role of cycling for kids in Rotterdam.

“It’s weird that children in a city never get a voice when it comes to mobility. A good city is a city where all children can cycle safely to school, sports and their friends. Cycling should mean freedom and fun for every child!” – Willem-Frederik Metzeaar

With the film and production expertise of Gertjan Hulster and Arne Gielen (Nieuw & Verbeterd), this vision became a reality and was shown for the first time on June 3rd.

The event began with a warm welcome from Prof. Dr. Marco te Brömmmelstroet , who energized the back rows of elementary school kids, prompting cheers. Judith de Frel (Tour de Femmes), Bart Christiaens (City of Rotterdam) and Fietsersbond director Esther van Garderen also spoke, recognizing the contributions of everyone involved.

About the short-film:

A good city puts the human touch and lets its children cycle safely to explore their city. That was the motivation for commissioning the film ‘Rotterdam Fietst’ by Arne Gielen and Gertjan Hulster.

Rotterdam children, cycling officials from the municipality and the alderman for Enforcement, Outdoor and Mobility, Vincent Karremans, are featured and tell what their ambitions, motivations and experiences are when it comes to cycling.

Since 1970, every two months, the Fietsersbond Rotterdam+Regio has been working together with the municipality of Rotterdam to make Rotterdam a safe cycling city for everyone and all ages.

Rotterdam Fietst is available with English, German, French, and Spanish subtitles. Interested in screening it in your city?  Send an email to info@dutchcycling.nl
