Knowledge DCE joins Wolverhampton Webinar 8 November 2024 Cycling News On October 31, 2024, the Dutch Cycling Embassy (DCE) participated in an online session with Wolverhampton, England, organised by BYCS’ Bicycle Mayor Samuel Henry. During the session, Samuel reflected on his recent visit to the Netherlands, where he met DCE project manager Shelley Bontje. His enthusiasm for cycling was contagious as he shared photos and personal stories from his trip, inspiring colleagues from Wolverhampton and the Black County councils and planning departments to consider how Dutch-style infrastructure interventions would look in their area. The event featured an insightful discussion on how Dutch cycling principles could be adapted to Wolverhampton’s streets and neighbourhoods. Participants were keen to understand the Dutch approach to designing for cycling safety, convenience, and integration with other modes of transport. Samuel highlighted examples of Dutch infrastructure that prioritise cyclist comfort and safety, sparking interest in how similar principles could be applied to the urban landscape of Wolverhampton. The session ended with a lively Q&A, where attendees asked Shelley Bontje thoughtful questions about practical challenges surrounding their mobility transition. Topics included strategies for adapting Wolverhampton’s junctions and streets to accommodate cyclists, balancing car use with active mobility, and overcoming space constraints in urban areas. The session provided insights into Dutch solutions and encouraged participants to think creatively about local applications. Shelley introduced some historical context to the Netherlands’ cycling culture, noting how the Dutch approach wasn’t always straightforward but was worth the effort for the resulting benefits to community health and safety. The DCE looks forward to continuing to support Wolverhampton’s journey toward more cycle-friendly streets and building on the momentum sparked by this engaging session.
