DCE in Rheine, Germany for Knowledge Exchange

3 April 2025

Last week the Dutch Cycling Embassy was invited by the city of Rheine in NRW, Germany for a number of presentations and discussions together with the expert Tim Adema from Roelofs. The day started with a bike ride through the city led by Michael Wolters, the mobility manager of the city. It became obvious that the city is very suitable for cycling and does have a number of paths and cycling streets but that there is also potential for improvements especially when it comes to intersections and the safety/division of traffic. The tour ended at the city planning office where a presentation and discussion with local planners was held to discuss best practices and local challenges in the city. After that we went to the city hall to speak in front of the Bauauschuss (construction committee) of the city to inspire and share why and how the Netherlands became a cycling country. In the evening the cycling ambassador of Rheine organised a presentation and discussion for the vernal public that was well visited and sparked many questions and new inspirations. It was a full and interesting exchange and we hope to continue the collaboration in the future.
