Climate Experience Austria study visit

26 June 2023

On Wednesday, 21st June and Thursday, 22nd June 2023, the Dutch Cycling Embassy hosted part of an annual international study visit by the Climate Experience Austria programme. This programme is organised by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection (BMK).

On the afternoon of Wednesday, 21st June, participants enjoyed a presentation on local and national advocacy in the Netherlands by Wim Bot, Policy Officer for national and international public affairs at the Fietsersbond, the Dutch cyclists’ union. This was followed by experiential learning through walking and cycling tours of Utrecht.

On Thursday, 22nd June 2023, the group came together indoors for presentations and a workshop with breakout sessions, based on Austrian case studies that they had submitted in advance. In this workshop, the participants were able to discuss, apply and adapt Dutch Cycling principles to their local challenges.

The tours were led by André Pettinga of CycleMotions and Elke Schimmel of Mobycon, with thanks also to Mark Wagenbuur of Bicycle Dutch for his support. The workshops were run by Maurits Lopes Cardozo of Bike-minded and Tim Adema of Roelofs.

The participants were extremely engaged throughout the intensive programme. They returned home with a range of ideas and best practice principles for initiation and implementation of cycling-related climate protection projects in Austria.
