Knowledge Bike Immersion Program Southeast Florida 14 June 2024 Cycling News Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Broward visited the Netherlands for a Bike Immersion Program to learn more about cycling and its benefits. Miami might well be the most famous beach city in the world. Therefore, we wanted to show the Dutch equivalent: The Hague and Scheveningen. This is where the first day of the program took place, guided by City of The Hague experts Rinse Gorter, Richard van der Ark, and Aiko Dokter. Thereby, Nanja Piek (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management) presented about Dutch national cycling policy. Day two took place in Rotterdam, where we were welcomed by Bart Christiaens (City of Rotterdam). Bart presented about Rotterdam’s policy to make sure everyone has access to a bike and how to make the city safe for all road users. Dick van Veen showed us how to design and build safe cycling infrastructure. Afterwards, Matt Bearden (Arcadis) presented about multi-modal transport systems and how the bike and train can be the golden combination. In the afternoon it was time to hop on our bikes and experience the lively bike lanes of Rotterdam. To end with a relaxed cycling experience, we were hosted by City of Houten on the final day of the bike immersion program. After presentations from Richard ter Avest (Goudappel) about livable cities and Christien Rodenburgh (New Urban Mobility) about orgware, we started our bike tour. Through Houten’s residential areas, nature, and a cycling highway, we finally arrived in Utrecht. Teije Gorris (Go-bility) moderated the final session to apply our learnings to the Southeast Florida context. We look back at an empowering Bike Immersion Program with lots of positive energy. Southeast Florida is on the right track to become a bike friendly region and we look forward to support these developments.
