Knowledge SWECO Finnish Webinar 1 February 2024 Cycling News On January 31st, the Dutch Cycling Embassy Shelley Bontje spoke at a Finnish webinar on “Service deregulation and the green shift in transport”, organized by SWECO. The webinar, aimed at exploring how the transport sector can navigate the challenges of sustainable development, delved into topics such as innovative planning, service development, and environmentally friendly mobility solutions. During her presentation, Bontje emphasized the importance of actively shaping the kind of society we aspire for and how the bicycle plays a role. Drawing lessons from the Netherlands, Bontje highlighted the future of cycling (“fiets”) and its implications for urban planning and transportation strategies. She discussed key factors influencing the effectiveness of cycling initiatives, including catchment areas, station choice, personalization, market competitiveness, liveliness of public spaces, and agglomeration effects.
