Teaching California How to ThinkBike
Delegation from the Dutch Cycling Embassy joins Deputy Minister Roald Lapperre on California trade mission.
Last week, the Dutch Cycling Embassy joined Deputy Minister Roald Lapperre on a trade mission to California. Stopping in San Francisco, Davis, Sacramento, and Los Angeles, the five day program was organized by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) on the themes of the Circular Economy, Resilience and Water Management, and Sustainable Mobility.
The Dutch Cycling Embassy was joined by three of our network participants: Maurits Lopez Cardozo of Bike-minded, Bas Govers and Jos van Kleff of Goudappel Coffeng, and Piet Brandjes and Harm-Jan Idema of APPM Consultants. Our message was focused on two specific solutions we felt applicable to the American context: long-distance cycling routes (in combination with the electric bicycle) and capturing the synergy between cycling and public transport.
The packed itinerary saw us lead a series of presentations, meetings, and workshops with transit authorities (SFMTA and LACMTA), mayor’s offices (Davis and Los Angeles), and Silicon Valley companies (Facebook and Google). Design consultant Maurits Lopez Cardozo also led the entire delegation on a bicycle tour of the site of the LARiverWay. As a 2028 Olympic legacy project, 18 km. of the historic waterway will be restored for active travel.
With a number of key relationships established, we now hope to return to the west coast in spring 2020, as part of a larger, cycling-focused trade mission. Stay tuned to our social media channels for more information, and get in touch if you’re interested in participating.
