City of Almaty Sustainable Transport

Almaty Open Streets Festival

From 22 till 23 September in Almaty the UNDP conference on cycling and walking took place.

Main theme of this conference was to get an overview of possibilities to integrate walking and cycling more in all day city life in Almaty. More cycling and walking in the city will contribute to make the mobility more sustainable. Cycling expert Ruben Loendersloot presented interesting examples of cycling infrastructure and the way municipalities and road authorities could work together in a better way in order to improve cycling possibilities. Especially the theme; using cycling infrastructure to improve as well cycling possibilities as car flow led to enthusiastic reactions. Also the workshop on designing cycling infrastructure led by other Dutch Cycling Embassy member Jeroen Buis was warmly welcomed.

After the conference the experts went cycling through Almaty. Even though this went quite well, car traffic seems to have the power of priority. Positive to know is that the municipality of Almaty is willing to change some car lanes into cycle lanes, what means that the position for the bike will get better the coming years.
